When Calcium carbonate, silica or iron are present, presence of water along with sand grains form Sandstones. Sandstone is often formed in layers. Some sandstones are extremely hard to work with where as some are so homogeneous and soft that they are suitable for carving. The color of the rock is largely determined by the cementing material - iron oxides produces reddish-brown sandstone, and the other materials produce sandstone in white, gray or yellow tones.
